explain why this really shook me, and I\u2019ll probably fail, but here goes: John\u2019s very secure in his sexuality. He\u2019s known he was gay since he was eight, and he grew up in a loving, supportive family. Yet he still fears that if he\u2019d stayed in a country where homosexuality was illegal for most of the first part of his life, that he wouldn\u2019t have survived.<\/p>\n<p>And that\u2019s why equal rights are so important.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This is over 2k notes now. I\u2019m secure and happy in my sexuality now, but growing up in a conservative Christian home? I\u2019d literally never seen a single queer character in my life. I only heard of \u201cthe homosexuals\u201d or, worse, \u201cthem,\u201d hissed through thinned lips like some kind of swear word, and I heard how they were horrible people who went against God. <\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why I thought I was a monster when I realized I wanted to kiss my best friend. I was fifteen with no help and no hope. And then my friend got me into Doctor Who. I\u2019ll never forget the moment when Jack kissed the Doctor and Rose each exactly the same way.  It changed my life. I read later that he was very careful to play each kiss as exactly the same, because it was important that kids like me saw that. Knew that there wasn\u2019t any difference. <\/p>\n<p>That kiss probably saved my life. I was fifteen, suicidal, closeted, and miserable, but damnit, if Jack could kiss the Doctor and end up a hero, why couldn\u2019t I be okay too? <\/p>\n<p>Seeing this shook me to my core.
