See, the orchestral score doesn\u2019t actually specify the use of a huge wooden mallet. In fact, it doesn\u2019t specify any particular instrument at all: it just describes a <b>completely hypothetical<\/b> instrumental sound &#8211;\u00a0\u201cbrief and mighty, but dull in resonance and with a non-metallic character (like the fall of an axe)\u201d &#8211; and leaves it to the orchestra director to figure out how to actually produce it. Apart from the Big Fucking Mallet, past attempts have included custom-made bass drums, smacking a wooden crate with a sledgehammer, and dropping heavy objects onto the stage from a great height.<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t know if Mahler actually <b>intended<\/b> to troll entire generations of orchestras, but if he did, it totally worked.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>What about swinging an axe into a log?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Not loud enough, or so I\u2019m told.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>mahler hammer? surely you mean mahllet.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><i>holly<\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>See, and this is why percussion is awesome.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat sound does it make?
