Perhaps he rose through the ranks because of <i>how well<\/i> he could control Bucky, without using extreme violence. He would have been the perfect brainwashing tool.<\/p>\n<p>So how many times did Pierce take Bucky\u2019s love for Steve and use it against him? Is that partially how HYDRA made Bucky so complaisant, so willing to take orders from Pierce?\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"tmblr-full\"><img src=\"https:\/\/78.media.tumblr.com\/a6419eef60f442f24cb24bdb27a2ee56\/tumblr_inline_nsph0oTWCM1rw8iem_540.jpg\" alt=\"image\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>A young Alexander Pierce would just have to smile at Bucky while spewing lines about Saving the World, and The Greater Good, and Bucky would have listened. It would have sounded <i>so familiar<\/i>\u00a0to him, manipulating the part of his brain that would follow Steve Rogers anywhere.<\/p>\n<p>The manipulation is especially noticeable in the vault scene. Seeing Steve on the bridge confused Bucky, but Pierce brings him back to focus by lecturing him about doing his part to shape the century. Bucky looks abashed, until Pierce says: \u201c[if we don\u2019t do our parts]\u2026HYDRA can\u2019t give the world the <b>freedom<\/b><i>\u00a0<\/i>it deserves\u201d.<i>\u00a0<\/i>At those words,\u00a0Bucky really <i>looks<\/i>\u00a0at Pierce, actually considers him for the first time:<\/p>\n<figure class=\"tmblr-full\"><img src=\"https:\/\/78.media.tumblr.com\/5ebdda90836ea10cd95278f84547fcb3\/tumblr_inline_nspkn6j9oo1rw8iem_540.png\" alt=\"image\" \/><\/figure>\n<p>He has a bite to his voice as he replies \u201cBut I <i>knew<\/i> him\u201d \u2013 so different from his submissive behaviour seconds before \u2013 because now that he remembers Steve, he doesn\u2019t implicitly trust Pierce. Bucky looks resentful, like he\u2019s seeing the manipulation for what it is, though he doesn\u2019t understand why.<\/p>\n<p>Even as his memories return, Bucky could be wary and nervous of Steve, confused by HYDRA\u2019s manipulations.
