when did we replace the word \u201csaid\u201d with \u201cwas like\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

i think it\u2019s really interesting and cool actually that language has shifted so that \u2018said\u2019 implies that you\u2019re quoting, while \u2018was like\u2019 means \u2018i\u2019m doing a general impression of this dude\u2019. i mean you can\u2019t really harsh on someone when \u2018she was like aaah!\u2019 means exactly that<\/i>, doesn\u2019t it? she was doing something very similar to the particular scream being made. so, \u2018like\u2019 indicates that you\u2019re dealing with generalities and inexact terms, and want to convey the gist of things rather than focussing on exact phrasing and technical details\u2014which is pretty great for young people, who are still developing cognitively and thus not always great at stringing a coherent sentence together.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

and then there\u2019s \u201cwas all\u201d, which tends to indicate a parody or exaggeration, or an even looser impression.<\/p>\n

she said: \u201cI know I\u2019ve filed these for you before, but it\u2019s really not part of my job duties and I\u2019m very busy today.\u201d<\/p>\n

she was like: \u201cdone filing your paperwork, not my department, do it yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n

she was all: \u201cshyeah, no.\u201d<\/p>\n
