For him, such \u201cfood\u201d would be an upgrade. As he reached for the wilted leaves, a female voice shouted, \u201cWhy in the hell are youstealing my rabbits\u2019 food?!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It was the mayor\u2019s wife, standing nearby holding a baby. She called the Nazi guards over, and Martin was beaten badly.<\/p>\n<p>Until that moment he had thought only of surviving the surreal horror which had already robbed him of his family and all that he knew &#8211; including his own mother and baby brother. <\/p>\n<p>Now a new desire would drive him forward: he vowed to return and kill the woman who had treated him so cruelly.<\/p>\n<p>He got his chance. <\/p>\n<p>Liberated by the U.S. Army on April 11, 1945, Martin and two buddies immediately grabbed machine guns from the pile of confiscated arms outside the camp, and made their way to the mayor\u2019s house. They found the woman, again holding her baby.<\/p>\n<p>Martin writes:<br \/>*************************<br \/>\u201cRemember me?!\u201d I yelled. \u201cDo you?!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her blond tresses shook violently. She hid her face behind her upraised hand as if shielding herself from the sun.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou had me beaten because of the rabbits. I\u2019m here to shoot you!\u201d I said, sounding like an SS.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo! Please!\u201d she quavered. \u201cThe baby, please!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I aimed the machine gun at her chest. The baby wailed. My finger hovered above the trigger.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShoot her!\u201d one of the boys said. \u201cShoot her!\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The woman\u2019s outstretched hand trembled in the air. My heart pounded against my chest like a hammer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShoot her!\u201d the other boy yelled. \u201cThat\u2019s what we came here for! Do it!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I froze. I couldn\u2019t do it. I could not pull the trigger. That was the moment I became human again. All the old teachings came rushing back. I had been raised to believe that life was a precious gift from God, that women and children must be protected.<\/p>\n<p>Had I pulled the trigger, I would have been like Mengele. He, too, had faced mothers holding babies \u2014 my mother holding my baby brother \u2014 and sentenced both to gruesome deaths.
