It\u2019s funny because it\u2019s true.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><b>Tampons are a\u00a0\u201cluxury item\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n<figure class=\"tmblr-full\"><img src=\"https:\/\/78.media.tumblr.com\/1a93ac09def17f7ab5c1480b09c9f42e\/tumblr_inline_nxzz05DjOB1rict0a_500.gif\" class=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Once I worked as an intern in the state capital. One of the representatives I worked for was this middle-aged guy. And he hated the tampon and napkin machines in the women\u2019s bathrooms. Hated them. He insisted that they weren\u2019t necessary.<\/p>\n<p>I found out why after I\u2019d been working there, oh, about a month. My period started suddenly, as it sometimes does, and I asked to excuse myself to go to the ladies\u2019 room. He wanted to know why. I told him.<\/p>\n<p>He started ranting about how lazy women were. How we wasted time. How we were so careless and unhygenic, and that there was no call for that. He finished by telling me that I certainly was NOT going to the ladies\u2019 room and that I was just going to sit there and work. He finished this off with a decisive nod, as if I\u2019d just be told and there could be no possible argument.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I don\u2019t go,\u201d I said in an overly patient tone,\u00a0\u201cthe blood is going to soak through my pants, stain my new skirt that I just bought, and possibly get on this chair I\u2019m sitting in. I need something to soak up the blood. That\u2019s why I need to go to the bathroom.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His face turned oatmeal-gray; an expression of pure horror spread across his face. He leaned forward and whispered,\u00a0\u201cWait, you mean that if you don\u2019t go, you\u2019ll just keep on bleeding? I thought that women could turn it off any time that they wanted!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I thought, \u00a0<i>You have got to be<\/i> kidding.<\/p>\n<p>Several horrified whispers later, I learned that he wasn\u2019t. He actually thought a) that women could shut down the menstrual cycle at will, b) that we essentially picked a week per month to spend more time in the bathroom, i.e. to goof off, and c) that napkins and tampons were sex toys paid for by Health and Human Services. I didn\u2019t know the term then, but he believed that tampons were dildos. Which was why he and a good number of his friends considered them luxuries.<\/p>\n<p>And that\u2019s how, at twenty, I had to give a talk on menstruation to a middle-aged married state representative who was one of my bosses. American politics, ladies and gentlemen.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><b>OH GOOD GRIEF!<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>YOU WERE WARNED &#8211;\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<figure class=\"tmblr-full\"><img src=\"https:\/\/78.media.tumblr.com\/b56a9488ecf098304d868a43441c0ee2\/tumblr_inline_ny05u9828Z1rict0a_540.gif\" alt=\"image\" \/><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"tmblr-full\"><img src=\"https:\/\/78.media.tumblr.com\/63984b2488a39a550e31f69c7a15badd\/tumblr_inline_ny05z3JOYO1rict0a_500.gif\" alt=\"image\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Am not actually very surprised, I am 33, my own sex education consisted of PREGNANCY IS VERY SCARY SO DO NOT SEX, and not much else. Am not surprised at all middle aged men don\u2019t know shit about women\u2019s periods<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This is so sickening and scary.<\/p>\n<p>Honestly, it makes me wish I *could* menstruate at will. <\/p>\n<p>PROJECTILE menstruation.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>When my aunt was in high school, she raised her hand and asked her male teacher if she could go to the bathroom. He said no.<\/p>\n<p>So she waited a couple minutes and asked again, explaining that\u2019s it\u2019s an emergency. He said no.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, she stood up and stated very loudly, \u201cMr. \u2013, either I go to the bathroom, or I bleed all over this carpet. Those are the only options here.
