the way Holmes talks about ghosts in TAB, because he goes from calmly saying they don\u2019t exist, to saying they do in a sense, to furiously screaming that they do not. It turned into a meta as I tried to work out why his beliefs and mood fluctuate this way (as well as why he goes from saying \u201cwe all have pasts\u201d in one scene to \u201cpast? what past?\u201d in the next). Spoiler: it has to do with Jim and Redbeard.\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n<p><b>On the train: <\/b>Sherlock asserts there are no ghosts in the paranormal sense.\u00a0\u201cSave those we make for ourselves\u201d implies a second meaning, and Watson asks for clarity, so this is particularly important. People we wish we hadn\u2019t associated with? Things we wish we hadn\u2019t done? Or alternatively, chances we never took, leaps we didn\u2019t take?<\/p>\n<p><b>Outside the manor: <\/b>Holmes defines his second meaning of a ghost as\u00a0\u201ca past,\u201d which is hardly less vague.\u00a0\u201cThe shadows that define our every sunny day\u201d is such a beautiful line. The word\u00a0\u201cdefine\u201d is especially interesting. You can\u2019t have shadows without light. A kind of Buddhist thought\u2026suffering is a part of life (and the root of suffering is<i> attachment, <\/i>an inability to let go<i>)<\/i>. At any rate, the important thing here is that Holmes says\u00a0\u201cwe all have a past.\u201d Meaning Sherlock has\u00a0\u201ca past.\u201d He has admitted it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><b>In the greenhouse: <\/b>Watson was curious about that whole \u201cghosts we make for ourselves\u201d line on the train, and apparently concluded Holmes meant something along the lines of romantic regrets, which is why he now presents himself a\u00a0\u201cbrain with no heart.\u201d Watson pulls at this thread in the greenhouse because he\u2019s been puzzling over since the train ride (and of course, this is really Sherlock pulling at the thread in his own mind, exploring his psyche through Watson). And Holmes suddenly plays dumb.\u00a0\u201cA past?\u201d As if he hadn\u2019t just said they <i>all <\/i>had one just hours ago! Sure enough, Watson defines \u201ca past\u201d as\u00a0\u201cromantic entanglements\u201d (which Holmes acknowledges). He doesn\u2019t want to talk to Watson about this (and yet he does, because this is all in his head.) He\u2019s impatient to be attacked by one of those ghosts he doesn\u2019t believe in. He briefly hears Redbeard, then the ghost he\u2019s been waiting for finally arrives.<\/p>\n<p><b>In the manor: <\/b>Holmes screams at Watson for insisting he saw a ghost. This type of anger directed at John is extremely rare. Holmes is not talking about <i>ghosts,<\/i>\u00a0he\u2019s talking about\u00a0\u201cghosts,\u201d aka\u00a0\u201ca past.\u201d He\u2019s just given Watson the answer to his question from the greenhouse.
