The video plainly shows how much progress has been made in passenger safety in those 50 years. Even though the Malibu is much lighter, its crumple zone absorbs much of the impact while the Bel Air lets the newer car\u2019s front end slam right into the driver.<sup id=\"fnref:1453222392\"><a href=\"1453222392\" rel=\"footnote\" target=\"_blank\">1<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Even though I\u2019ve seen crash test footage before, I was shocked at how quickly the airbag deployed in the newer car\u2026it\u2019s fully inflated before the rest of the car and its occupants even realize that inertia is about to do some bad things.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li class=\"footnote\" id=\"fn:1453222392\">\n<p>And LOL to the truthers in the comments insisting that the test was flawed (<a href=\"http:\/\/wheels.blogs.nytimes.com\/2009\/09\/18\/more-details-about-1959-bel-air-crash-test\/\" target=\"_blank\">there was an engine<\/a> in the Bel Air, BTW) and that good ol\u2019 American cars were built like tanks back in the day and therefore are impervious to harm.<a href=\"1453222392\" title=\"return to article\" target=\"_blank\">\u21a9<\/a><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>jkottke: In 2009, The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety conducted a crash test between a 1959 Chevrolet Bel Air and a 2009 Chevy Malibu.
