And the fact that he was black is barely ever mentioned or the book he wrote inspired by his experiences.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Other things not to forget about Alexandre Dumas:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>chose to take on his slave grandmother\u2019s last name, Dumas, like <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thomas-Alexandre_Dumas\" target=\"_blank\">his father<\/a> did before him.<\/li>\n<li>grew up too poor for formal education, so was largely self-taught, including becoming a prolific reader, multilingual, well-travelled, and a foodie, resulting in his writing both a combination encyclopedia\/cookbook (which just\u2014 is fucking <i>outrageous <\/i>to me) AND the adaptation of The Nutcracker on which Tchaikovsky based his ballet<\/li>\n<li>he also wrote a LOOOOT of nonfiction <i>and<\/i> fiction about history, politics, and revolution, bc he was pro-monarchy, but a radical cuss, and that got him in a lot of hot water at home and abroad.<\/li>\n<li>even beyond that, he generally put up with a lot of racist bullshit in France, so he went and wrote <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Georges_%28novel%29\" target=\"_blank\">a novel<\/a> about colonialism and a BLATANTLY self-insert anti-slavery vigilante hero (which he then cribbed from to write the Count of Monte Cristo, the main character of which, Edmond Dant\u00e9s, Dumas also based on himself).<\/li>\n<li>(\u2026a novel which also features a LOAD of PoC <i>beyond<\/i> the Count, and at LEAST one queer character, btw, bc EVERY MOVIE ADAPTATION OF ANYTHING BY DUMAS IS A LIE; seriously, at LEAST one of the four Musketeers is Black, y&#8217;all.)<\/li>\n<li>famously, when some fuckshit or other wanted to come at Dumas with some anti-Black foolishness, Dumas replied, \u201cMy father was a mulatto, my grandfather was a Negro, and my great-grandfather a monkey. You see, Sir, my family starts where yours <i>ends<\/i>.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\n<p><img src=\"https:\/\/78.media.tumblr.com\/tumblr_m1dpg5Q35q1r5jtugo1_400.jpg\" class=\"toggle_inline_image inline_image constrained_image\" \/><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li>for the bicentennial of his birthday, Pres. Jacques Cirac was like, \u201c\u2026sorry about the hella racism,\u201d and had Dumas\u2019s ashes reinterred at the Panth\u00e9on of Paris, bc if you\u2019re gonna keep the corpses of the cream of the crop all together, Dumas\u2019s more widely read and translated than literally<i> everybody else<\/i>.<\/li>\n<li>and they are still finding stuff old dude wrote, seriously; like <i>discovering<\/i> \u201clost\u201d works as recently as 2002, publishing stuff for the first time as recently as 2005.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>ALSO IMPORTANT:<\/p>\n<p><img src=\"https:\/\/78.media.tumblr.com\/831444b376043c5a05434e54502ec1b4\/tumblr_inline_n14v3fUmT21qdkk2k.jpg\" class=\"toggle_inline_image inline_image constrained_image\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img src=\"https:\/\/78.media.tumblr.com\/1a4e9b18792573a19d30d92f61c3ee71\/tumblr_inline_n14v3vbomL1qdkk2k.jpg\" class=\"toggle_inline_image inline_image constrained_image\" \/><\/p>\n<p><i>SWAG<\/i><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>I am absolutely ashamed to admit I had NO idea Dumas was black.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>when this post first went around (a year ago apparently) I was like <a href=\"http:\/\/elodieunderglass.tumblr.com\/post\/76953949187\/thefemaletyrant-princessnijireiki\" target=\"_blank\">BUT WHAT ABOUT DADDY DUMAS THOUGH\u00a0<\/a>because basically<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>daddy general dumas was an immense fierce french warrior who was a 6 foot plus, stunningly gorgeous and charismatic Black gentleman\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>he invaded egypt<\/li>\n<li>the native egyptians said\u00a0\u201cis this napoleon? this must be napoleon. we for one welcome our majestic new overlord\u201d<\/li>\n<li>then napoleon showed up<\/li>\n<li>napoleon has all the presence of yesterday\u2019s plain Tesco hummus<\/li>\n<li>the native egyptians were like\u00a0\u201c\u2026 no\u2026 no, we\u2019ve thought very hard and we\u2019ll have General Dumas actually\u201d<\/li>\n<li>this did not make napoleon happy<\/li>\n<li>in fact it made him jealous<\/li>\n<li>napoleon felt so emasculated that he launched a campaign of revenge against General Dumas, including taking away his pension, that probably inspired a lot of Alexandre\u2019s rather satisfying scenes in which fathers are nobly avenged and the money-grubbing villains are rubbed in the mud<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>I was never taught that he was Black either.
