Many people have noted that the stairs in Sherlock\u2019s mind palace in HLV bear a striking resemblance to the stairs in ASiP, from Sherlock & John\u2019s first case\/night together.<\/p>\n

However there\u2019s an added symbolism that I haven\u2019t seen anybody comment on before. \u00a0(Though of course I may have missed it! \u00a0But this meta<\/a> was the only thing I could find that covers similar ground.)<\/p>\n

One of the biggest obstacles to John and Sherlock\u2019s relationship is John\u2019s disbelief in the strength of Sherlock\u2019s feelings for him. \u00a0And why wouldn\u2019t he disbelieve? \u00a0Sherlock has been pushing John away for a long time, has been careless with his time and his belongings and his emotions, has lied and experimented on him and called him an idiot. \u00a0He\u2019s encouraged John\u2019s mistaken belief that\u00a0\u201che doesn\u2019t feel things that way\u201d. \u00a0<\/p>\n

These doubts are so deep seated that even as late as His Last Vow, after Sherlock has risked his life multiple times, spent two years in a dangerous undercover mission, and folded goddamn serviettes for him, John still asks,\u00a0\u201cBut why would he care? He\u2019s Sherlock. Who would he bother protecting?\u201d<\/p>\n

But Sherlock doesn\u2019t<\/i>\u00a0do this from the very beginning. \u00a0Until they go view Jennifer Wilson\u2019s body together, Sherlock has been on his best behavior. \u00a0He smiles, he flirts, he offers to clean, he shows off his skills, he invites John on an adventure, he asks his opinion, and he defends John\u2019s presence to Donovan and Lestrade.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The winds shift with this line: \u201cWhat is it like in your funny little brains? It must be so boring!\u201c And then, a few moments later, Sherlock rushes out to find the pink suitcase\u2026 leaving John behind.<\/p>\n

The music changes, back to John\u2019s slow, sad theme. \u00a0We see John slowly walking down the stairs, struggling with his limp, in a shot that takes nearly twenty seconds.<\/p>\n

This moment, I\u2019d argue, is the first time Sherlock hurts John. \u00a0It\u2019s also the first time Sherlock leaves John behind, but it won\u2019t be the last. \u00a0<\/p>\n

It is therefore tremendously symbolic that this staircase is the one Sherlock struggles up as he struggles to survive the shooting. \u00a0It works on multiple levels: he\u2019s trying to get back to John, he doesn\u2019t want to hurt or abandon John by dying, and in order to keep John safe and truly make him happy, he needs to address the pain and the distance he\u2019s created – that he\u2019s been creating since this moment, the day after they met.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
