Greg should have known something was amiss when he saw light shining through the windows of his flat, but he was so knackered after 15 hours on the job that it didn\u2019t even occur to him to be suspicious.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Shouldering open the door, he nearly dropped his keys on the mat from the shock of finding Mycroft Holmes leaning casually against the kitchen counter in his impeccably pressed suit, umbrella tucked neatly under his arm.<\/p>\n

\u201cWelcome home, Gregory.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cJesus, Myc \u2013 nearly gave me a heart attack! How \u2013 how did you get in?\u201d<\/p>\n

Shaking his head, Greg staggered over the threshold.\u00a0\u201cNever mind, don\u2019t answer that,\u201d he said, and he just caught the shadow of a smug smile playing at the edges of the other man\u2019s lips.<\/p>\n

Rather than reply, Mycroft beckoned Greg into the sitting room-cum-dining area where \u2013 would surprises never cease? \u2013 a crisp white table cloth had been draped precisely over Greg\u2019s secondhand table. Candles flickered merrily, illuminating a bottle of merlot already breathing next to two ready wine glasses and place settings made up for two. Something, though, wasn\u2019t quite right\u2026<\/p>\n

\u201cAre those\u2026 did you get chips<\/i>?\u201d<\/p>\n

Sure enough, stacked high on the gleaming china plates were mounds of the greasiest chips Greg had ever seen and \u2013 more wonderous still \u2013 two healthy portions of deep fried cod, steam still issuing from the crisp, golden batter.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, this is\u2026 unexpected,\u201d Greg sputtered, turning around to regard Mycroft with wide-eyed wonder.<\/p>\n

\u201cI happened to hear that you\u2019d had a particularly trying day,\u201d Mycroft replied, leaning his umbrella against the wall and crossing the room.\u00a0\u201cI knew you would be too tired to stop for your usual post-case fare, so I thought I would bring it to you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Greg felt an unexpected lump in his throat as he regarded the peculiar, brilliant, terrifying man who had become so dear to him these last five months.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut you hate pub food,\u201d Greg said, stepping closer to Mycroft and staring deeply into his\u00a0pale blue eyes.<\/p>\n

\u201cYes,\u201d Mycroft murmured, his eyebrows raising slightly,\u00a0\u201cbut I know what you<\/i>\u00a0like.\u201d<\/p>\n
