He\u2019s imitating Biggie in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=E_B0rOLvAOo\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cGoing Back To Cali\u201d<\/a>: \u201cImma spell my name one more time, check it \/\u00a0It\u2019s the, N-O, T-O, R-I, O \/<br \/>U-S \/ you just \/ lay down \/ slow.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s when I was like, oh yes, it is <i>on<\/i>. Much of the brilliance of Hamilton is in how Lin-Manuel Miranda manages to incorporate every musical style from Sondheim to pop to R&amp;B to create something totally new and infectious (he raps a reference to Gilbert &amp; Sullivan for god\u2019s sake). <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/stage\/2015\/oct\/02\/how-did-hamilton-become-broadway-breakout-hit\" target=\"_blank\">This piece<\/a> called Miranda a \u201chuman iPod shuffle\u201d and it\u2019s hard to disagree. He elevates American art forms like jazz, musical theater and rap to tell the story of a bunch of old white dudes in the 18th century and makes it downright riveting.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But it\u2019s the hip hop references that really make the show sing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Of course, you don\u2019t <i>have<\/i> to be a fan of hip hop and R&amp;B to love the music, but if you are, prepare to be gone till November. The entire soundtrack is littered with Easter eggs. Some are direct (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=dBJWKLdS6V4\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cTen Duel Commandments\u201d<\/a> is a nod to Biggie\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=6ihPOTDxMfE\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cTen Crack Commandments\u201d<\/a>); others are more subtle (listen to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=RRxf6MCBaC0\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cHelpless\u201d<\/a> for shades of Beyonce\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2XY3AvVgDns\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cCountdown.\u201d<\/a>) Play\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=cgU32GLLadQ\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cMeet Me Inside\u201d<\/a> and then DMX\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=thIVtEOtlWM&amp;index=1&amp;list=RDthIVtEOtlWM\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cParty Up (In Here)\u201d<\/a> and marvel. Listen to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=RQEg-mkAl0c\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cRight-Hand Man\u201d<\/a> for Jay Z in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mtv.com\/videos\/jay-z\/469115\/on-to-the-next-one.jhtml\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cOn To the Next One.\u201d<\/a>\u00a0Find the Fugees references and message me, you get a prize.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s no way I could go through all of them, but let\u2019s just look at one song as a dope example: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-WWzktZDarE\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cCabinet Battle #1.\u201d<\/a> First of all, you\u2019d never know you needed a rap battle between Jefferson and Hamilton in your life until you hear this, and then you\u2019re like, goddamit how did I live without it? A rap battle is, at its heart, a tennis match of wits and verbal one-upsmanship. It\u2019s the perfect frame for something that could be incredibly boring: a debate over policy. And what a debate it is. So let\u2019s go through some of my favorite callbacks, shall we?\u00a0<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The song opens with George Washington\u2013who is officiating the battle, natch\u2013welcoming the crowd: \u201cLadies and gentleman, you could have been anywhere else in the world tonight, but you\u2019re here with us in New York City!\u201d Sound familiar? It\u2019s borrowed, both in words and delivery, from Jay\u2019s intro to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1tWmyPMf3wU\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cIzzo\u201d<\/a> on The Blueprint: \u201cThanks for coming out tonight, you could have been anywhere in the world, but you\u2019re here with me.\u201d \u00a0\ud83d\ude4c \ud83d\ude4c \ud83d\ude4c<\/li>\n<li>OK, this is sort of an aside, but it\u2019s too good to not mention. Even though Thomas Jefferson is basically a dick, his swagger is on point, as evidenced by Daveed Diggs\u2019 smug growl on \u201cThese are wise words \/ enterprising men quote em \/ don\u2019t act surprised you guys \/ <b>cuz I wrote em.<\/b>\u201d I need Daveed Diggs to marry me just for that. Oh, and the\u00a0\u201cyawww\u201d at the end of the line? Totally Drake.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Jefferson doesn\u2019t let up:\u00a0\u201cOh, if the shoe fits wear it! \/ New York\u2019s in debt, why should Virginia bear it?\u201d Umm\u2026that\u2019s an allusion to Eminem\u2019s verse on the Jay\/Em joint <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=sStrUWJXq0U\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cRenegade\u201d<\/a>:\u00a0\u201c<b><\/b>If the shoe fits, I\u2019ll wear it \/ But if it don\u2019t, then y&#8217;all\u2019ll swallow the truth, grin and bear it.\u201d\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>And then Jefferson takes it all the way back to the godfather of modern hip hop:\u00a0\u201cSuch a blunder, sometimes it makes me wonder why I even bring the thunder\u201d is a direct shout to Grandmaster Flash\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=O4o8TeqKhgY\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cThe Message.\u201d<\/a> Don\u2019t forget the throat-clearing\u00a0\u201caha-ha-ha-ha.\u201d\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And that\u2019s not even getting into the devastating lyrics (if I was in the crowd when Hamilton raps\u00a0\u201cYeah, keep ranting \/ We know who\u2019s really doing the planting\u201d I would have been on. the. floor.).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>I know I\u2019ve been raving about Hamilton since NPR first streamed the soundtrack two weeks ago, so I figured I owed it to you guys to explain a tiny bit of why it has me enraptured. Best of all, the whole soundtrack is so densely packed, you discover new layers upon every listen.
