1. The Black Panthers were birth like any revolution out of a necessity for change.<\/p>\n

2. The symbolism of the Panther wasn\u2019t just because black is beautiful.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

3. In 1966, at Merritt College, Huey P. Newton & Bobby Seale created The Black Panthers.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

<\/figure>\n

4. After the Watts Riots of 1965, and inspired by Robert Williams\u2019\u00a0Negroes with Guns<\/a>, the organization\u2019s intentions were to empower the black community.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

<\/figure>\n

5. And they did so in congruence with the law.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

<\/figure>\n

6. But as the law would have it\u2026<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

<\/figure>\n

7. But this was still a telling moment as to how politically powerful the Panthers were even at an early stage.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

But the Panthers forged forward because this was about protecting their communities, even though they were facing the unchecked police.<\/p>\n

9. The Panthers were considered to be a terrorist organization though.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

<\/figure>\n

<\/p>\n

10. And then things changed.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

<\/figure>\n

11. And 2 days after MLK\u2019s assassination, the Panthers\u2019 first recruit Bobby Hutton was gunned down. He was 17yo.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

<\/figure>\n

12. Marlon Brando was an early supporter of the Panthers and gave aeulogy at Hutton\u2019s funeral<\/a>.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

<\/figure>\n

13.<\/p>\n

It was important to decode and understand the language too.<\/p>\n

<\/figure>\n

14.<\/p>\n

The FBI began their illegal and divisive Counter Intelligence Program to undermine the Panthers.<\/p>\n

J. Edgar Hoover was trash.<\/p>\n

<\/figure>\n

16.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Black families suffered.<\/p>\n

<\/figure>\n

17.\u00a0<\/p>\n

But the Panthers did their best to keep programs going for the community especially the breakfast program.<\/p>\n

<\/figure>\n

18.\u00a0<\/p>\n

And it was thanks to the Panthers that a lot of these programs exist today.<\/p>\n

<\/figure>\n

19.\u00a0<\/p>\n

And we have to acknowledge the role of the women.<\/p>\n

<\/figure>\n

Peaches was an OG.<\/p>\n

<\/figure>\n

21.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The women, without a doubt, held the Panthers together.<\/p>\n

<\/figure>\n

The Panthers were also inclusive.<\/p>\n

<\/figure>\n

And then there was Fred Hampton. A man so rooted in his convictions he put immediate fear in the establishment.<\/p>\n

And the violent murder of this leader is still traumatic to this day.<\/p>\n

The murder of Hampton put a serious damper on the movement. Bobby Seale said it best to challenge the media\u2019s message.<\/p>\n

The members of the Panthers forged forward though, this time started seeking political office to make changes.<\/p>\n

However some are still political prisoners.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

And the relevance is not lost today.<\/p>\n

29. And if it weren\u2019t for Stanley Nelson, we wouldn\u2019t have this moment now to reflect on the significance of this movement.<\/p>\n
