Black gloves, hat, cloak, and dress. In public. The whole nine yards. That\u2019s not a fashion choice or a gothic thing. Back then when people wore all black like that, they were in mourning for someone who died. No one did mourning like the Victorians, that shit was an art form to them.<\/p>\n<p>Someone in her family has died\u2014she could even be a young widow. No one\u2019s accompanying her either. With the carpet bag? She\u2019s traveling alone while still in deep mourning. Look at the closeup. She\u2019s got <em>tears in her eyes.<\/em> She is upset, devastated in a way that one is only when someone has died. And the guy\u2019s still bothering her, like her problems are flippant bullshit and she needs to just smile or pay attention to him because ladies are supposed to be pleasing for men no matter what shit they\u2019re going through. That\u2019s not a look of \u201cwhat an ass.\u201d That\u2019s a look of devastation that even in her pain, she\u2019s expected to give people like him focus. She\u2019s not mad. She\u2019s hurt. And to add insult to injury? Everyone would be able to tell. It was a clear sign and still is in ways that someone is mourning, to dress in black crepe like that. He would know why she\u2019s wearing all black, and he\u2019s still <em>demanding her attention.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>What an <strong>insufferable dick.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ectoplasmosis.tumblr.com\/post\/34550432474\/strixus-ectoplasmosis-the-irritating\" target=\"_blank\">At least I\u2019m not the only one who saw this.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>I\u2019m reblogging myself to add some comments from my mom. She\u2019s a docent at the Portland Art Museum, and I wanted to see her take on this painting, given her art\/art history knowledge. She said:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust looking at it I\u2019d say she\u2019s recently lost her parent(s). She\u2019s traveling alone and is waiting in a station that would be considered too \u201crough\u201d for a lady in high standing. The crates around her, even the behavior of the man would indicate she\u2019s in a rough part of town.
