Thing I saw on Tumblr recently, reacting to a great picture of Mark Hamill hugging Lupita Nyong\u2019o: \u201cI love that Mark Hamill has just unilaterally decided Luke is everybody\u2019s father, and also gay. :D\u201d<\/p>\n

To which I can only say this\u2026<\/p>\n

It\u2019s even better than that.<\/p>\n

If you check out Hamill\u2019s full quote, here\u2019s what you\u2019ll read:<\/p>\n

\u201cFans are writing and ask all these questions, \u2018I\u2019m bullied in school\u2026I\u2019m afraid to come out. Could Luke be gay?\u2019 I\u2019d say it is meant to be interpreted by the viewer. If you think Luke is gay, of course he is.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

And, of course, that works for more than just gay. Gay, straight, bi, pan, ace, demi, trans, cis\u2026anything at all. If you think Luke is, of course Luke is.<\/p>\n

Even things you might not be able to think Luke is, Star Wars<\/i> finds a way. Is it possible for Luke Skywalker to be a cis woman? Sounds like a stretch, I have to imagine. But then\u2026as many people have established, in early drafts of the screenplay, the character occupying Luke\u2019s place was a woman. Who\u2019s to say that isn\u2019t as much \u201cLuke\u201d as anything else?<\/p>\n

The one thing Luke always is, through everything, is the one we look up to. That\u2019s why it\u2019s so important to the people writing in to Hamill. \u201cIf Luke can be gay,\u201d they are saying, \u201cit can be OK. I can face my fear. I can see Luke as someone to emulate, to be like. Luke can give me strength.\u201d<\/p>\n

No matter what you are, Luke can be you.<\/p>\n

And that\u2019s when you realize what Luke really is. And of course it\u2019s what Luke is. What Luke always was, from the beginning.<\/p>\n

Luke Skywalker is the Hero with a Thousand Faces.<\/p>\n

Including yours.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
