Could this be a point about Maslow\u2019s hierarchy? Sherlock only goes out with John when he isn\u2019t hungry, because food or the act around eating is purely utilitarian for him so otherwise he may see it as indulgent. But it seems he maintains agency with Magnussen by satisfying his bodily needs first before dealing with him. Is this the only time we see him eat?<\/b><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

I think that this emphasises Magnussen\u2019s sexually threatening interactions with Sherlock. \u00a0His threats in the deleted scene, in the hospital, have shown us this dynamic and I think that here we see a type of strategic,\u00a0\u201cflirting\u201d, from Sherlock. \u00a0I think he\u2019s trying to play Magnussen\u2019s game on his turf and just like he,\u00a0\u201cflirts\u201d, with The Woman because\u00a0that\u2019s what her game requires I think he does this here with CAM, too. \u00a0(I see Irene as reverse Magnussen<\/a>, well benign Magnussen, anyway). \u00a0<\/p>\n

He says,\u00a0\u2018I\u2019ve been thinking about you\u2026\u2019, and CAM\u2019s like,\u00a0\u2018I\u2019ve been thinking about you, too\u2019, and like this is like mock up of flirting. \u00a0They\u2019re threatening each other but there\u2019s a veneer of sexual innuendo there,<\/p>\n

Sherlock is eating because he\u2019s making himself sexually vulnerable and because he\u2019s also being threatened in a vulnerable place: with blackmail about his sexuality and his love of John. \u00a0Like, he\u2019s accepting\/acknowledging that he\u2019s sexually vulnerable in relation to Magnussen.<\/p>\n

Magnussen eating his food and putting his fingers in his glass <\/a>just further cement his boundary-crushing insidious personal aggression, I think.<\/p>\n

I think the use of bokeh in this scene also shows us that this scene is about feelings (I think that circles\/spheres on the show represent feelings because of their connection to the solar system<\/a>, something that Sherlock claims to not have any use for and know nothing about, just like sentiment). \u00a0I mean we know CAM knows,\u00a0\u2018things\u2019, about people and most people\u2019s weak spots have to do with their feelings, their lovers, their relationships, etc. \u00a0Here we see Sherlock admit that he wants to see into Appledore, he wants to see all the secrets,<\/p>\n

I think on a more surface level Sherlock is playing Magnussen\u2019s creepy game and one a deeper level Sherlock is becoming emotional\/sexually vulnerable and admitting he wants to know what the secrets are: his own and those of others.<\/p>\n

The idea that food = sex on the show is very well accepted (probably originated with LSiT like so many others) so that would go back to the idea that this is a sexually vulnerable position for Sherlock to be in. \u00a0Maybe he\u2019s becoming vulnerable on purpose to seem weak and try to lull CAM into a false sense of security. \u00a0He\u2019s literally,\u00a0\u2018showing his neck\u2019, here (a behaviour animals will do when they\u2019re under threat to show their surrender). \u00a0So, I do think it\u2019s a power play for Sherlock to appear,\u00a0\u2018weak\u2019, to CAM. \u00a0The latter will even add,\u00a0\u2018morphine\u2019, to the list of Sherlock\u2019s pressure points but for all we know Sherlock showed him this side of him on purpose: he gives himself more morphine in front of CAM specifically. \u00a0Maybe to cope with him or maybe to emphasise his,\u00a0\u2018weakened\u2019, position against Magnussen.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve speculated that food is actually romance esp because of the Woman and his conclusion that she\u2019s romantically interested in him, not just sexually attracted to him. \u00a0But, like, either way, what CAM knows goes to the heart of Sherlock\u2019s vulnerability in both a sexual and romantic way.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

I agree with this, but my focus is more on the fact that Sherlock is eating by himself before Magnussen comes in, and then Magnussen, who doesn\u2019t have his own food, takes the food off of Sherlock\u2019s plate. This is, IMO, a clear rape metaphor. With the deleted scene, this serves much the same purpose, but more thinly veiled.<\/p>\n

I also question whether this scene actually exists in the \u201creal world\u201d..it is odd. It may be a Mindpalace occurrence, as sherlock dragging himself to a restaurant with IV pole et all is a bit much. ( I\u2019ve fic\u2019d it this way, and I still haven\u2019t decided if it is real or MP yet).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
